International Women in Engineering Day - Betsy Catchings

According to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, only about 34% of engineers in the workforce are women. In Cayce, we are fortunate to have one of these outstanding female engineers as our Director of Cayce Utilities.

As Utilities Director, Betsy Catchings has a vast area of responsibility that includes: a 25 million-gallons-per-day (MGD) wastewater treatment facility, a 9.6 MGD water treatment facility, 100,000 gallon-per-day grease and septage receiving facility, 76 lift stations, approximately 285 miles of force main and gravity sewer lines, over 225 miles of water lines and more than 70 employees.

In 2024, Betsy was named the Water Environment Association of South Carolina’s (WEASC) Engineer of the Year for the Capital District. In past years she was also named the WEASC Capital District Young Professional of the Year, the WEASC State Young Professional of the Year, and the WEF / WEASC Arthur Sidney Bedel Award recipient for Extraordinary Service. Betsy also consistently helps raise awareness for the Association’s Annual Scholarship fund.

In Cayce, Betsy has helped secure ARPA, RIA, and CDBG grant funds to assist in offsetting rising costs and has enrolled many of our utilities’ operators in the Central Carolina Technical College water treatment certification course.

Cayce City Manager, Michael Conley, stated, “Betsy’s strong work ethic and twenty plus years of engineering knowledge has provided money-saving solutions to fix some of our aging infrastructure; thus, saving our city and our citizens’ money.”

In celebration of the recent International Women in Engineering Day, our Cayce staff, Cayce elected officials, and our Cayce citizens would like to thank one of our incredibly talented and innovative leaders, Mrs. Betsy Catchings!
