Licensed Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator - Operator C
The City of Cayce Utilities Department is seeking a qualified and dependable Licensed Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to help maintain the safe and effective operation of the City's wastewater treatment facilities. This position plays a critical role in protecting public health and the environment through the monitoring, treatment, and maintenance of wastewater systems.
Position Overview: Under direct supervision, the Licensed Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator assists in the operation, maintenance, and quality control of the City's wastewater treatment facility. The position is responsible for monitoring treatment processes, conducting routine testing, maintaining equipment, collecting samples, and ensuring compliance with operational standards and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily operation of the wastewater treatment plant and related systems.
- Monitor treatment processes and perform routine quality control and process control testing.
- Determine and adjust chemical dosages to ensure proper wastewater treatment.
- Operate, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on pumps, motors, compressors, and treatment equipment.
- Collect wastewater samples and drive City vehicles to monitoring locations as needed.
- Read and record data from gauges, meters, charts, and monitoring equipment.
- Change filters, adjust process flows, maintain chemical feed systems, and monitor storage tanks.
- Safely handle treatment chemicals and replace chlorine and sulfur dioxide cylinders.
- Maintain operating logs, reports, and plant records.
- Perform general housekeeping and upkeep of plant facilities and equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures, including confined space, respiratory protection, and chemical handling protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Vocational or technical training in wastewater treatment, environmental sciences, utilities, or a related field.
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
- South Carolina Class "C" Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
- At least one year of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional wastewater treatment certifications or advanced operator licenses.
- Experience performing laboratory testing and process control analysis.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience working with SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) regulations and compliance requirements.
Work Environment: This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a wastewater treatment facility environment. Duties may involve:
- Climbing stairs and ladders to elevated structures and treatment basins.
- Working around moving machinery, chemicals, confined spaces, and wastewater treatment processes.
- Lifting and carrying equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, odors, and industrial work environments.
Successful candidates must be able to pass required respiratory protection evaluations, including spirometer and respirator fit testing.
