Licensed Biological Wastewater Treatment Operator - Operator B

The City of Cayce is seeking a skilled and motivated Licensed Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join our Utilities team. This position plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment by ensuring the safe and effective operation of the City's wastewater treatment facility.

Working under the direction of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent, this position performs advanced wastewater treatment operations, maintenance, laboratory testing, and process control while helping ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant processes and equipment.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, compressors, and treatment equipment.
  • Determine chemical dosages and conduct quality control and process control testing.
  • Operate dewatering equipment including centrifuges and belt presses.
  • Monitor, record, and analyze operational data from plant systems and equipment.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities including sampling, testing, analysis, quality control, and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain compliance with all South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) and EPA regulations.
  • Assist with sludge treatment and disposal operations.
  • Perform housekeeping and safety-related duties throughout the facility.
  • Provide guidance, training, and work assignments to plant personnel as needed.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities and respond to operational issues as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Vocational or technical training in wastewater treatment or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of wastewater treatment plant operating experience.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • Current Class B Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within a reasonable timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an NPDES-permitted wastewater treatment facility.
  • Advanced laboratory and process control experience.
  • Experience training or leading other operators.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements: This position requires regular walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, operating equipment, handling chemicals, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Employees may work at elevated heights, in confined spaces, and around machinery and treatment processes. Candidates must be able to pass required respirator fit testing and spirometer testing.
