Operator Trainee (Distribution & Collection Field Crew Operator)
The City of Cayce Utilities Department is seeking a motivated and hardworking individual to join our team as an Operator Trainee. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity to build a career in the water and wastewater utility industry while serving the community through the operation, maintenance, and repair of essential public infrastructure.
Salary: $12.54 – $14.79 per hour (DOE)
Position Overview: Under general supervision, the Operator Trainee assists with the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position performs hands-on field work, operates a variety of tools and equipment, and supports the Utilities Department in delivering reliable services to residents and businesses.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines.
- Operate tools and equipment including dump trucks, pipe saws, compressors, jackhammers, and other utility maintenance equipment.
- Help construct new water and sewer infrastructure.
- Repair fire hydrants, valves, and related utility components.
- Perform sewer inspections and assist with identifying system defects and infiltration issues.
- Dig trenches, locate underground utilities, and support excavation activities.
- Complete vehicle inspections, maintenance logs, work orders, and incident reports.
- Communicate with customers regarding service repairs and maintenance activities.
- Assist with roadway, sidewalk, curb, and asphalt repairs related to utility work.
- Maintain equipment, vehicles, and the Utilities Compound grounds.
- Participate in after-hours and emergency on-call assignments as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Six months or more of construction, labor, mechanical, or related experience.
- Valid South Carolina driver's license with a good driving record.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Must live within a 15-mile radius of the Utilities Compound on Old Dunbar Road.
Preferred Qualifications
- One to three years of experience in a municipal water and wastewater utility environment.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with tanker endorsement.
- Experience operating construction or utility maintenance equipment.
Professional Development
The successful candidate will be required to obtain a South Carolina Water Distribution License Certification within two years of employment. The City supports employee development and career growth within the utility profession.
