Sanitation Truck Driver I
Salary Range: $16.16 – $19.09 per hour
The City of Cayce is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Sanitation Truck Driver I to join our Sanitation Department. This position plays an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness, health, and appearance of our community by providing reliable refuse and recycling collection services to residents and businesses throughout the city.

Position Overview: Under direct supervision, the Sanitation Truck Driver I operates sanitation and recycling vehicles on assigned collection routes while assisting with refuse collection and disposal activities. This position is responsible for safely operating equipment, supporting collection crews, performing routine vehicle inspections, and helping maintain efficient waste and recycling services throughout the City.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate garbage and recycling trucks on assigned collection routes.
- Collect residential and commercial refuse and recyclable materials.
- Assist with refuse collection activities and work on the rear of collection vehicles when needed.
- Direct and assist assigned Refuse Collectors during daily operations.
- Transport collected waste to designated landfill facilities for disposal.
- Review and submit landfill weight tickets and related documentation.
- Monitor collection areas and identify locations requiring special pickups or large-item collection.
- Assist residents and customers with questions regarding collection services and proper waste disposal.
- Help supervisors resolve collection-related concerns and customer service issues.
- Clear debris and maintain clean work areas during and after collection activities.
- Perform routine vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance, including checking fluids, tires, brakes, and fuel levels.
- Maintain sanitation vehicles and equipment in clean and safe operating condition.
- Utilize required personal protective equipment and follow all departmental safety procedures.
- Assist with storm debris removal and special collection events as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B.
- Minimum of six months of truck driving experience.
- Minimum of one year of experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and customer service.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in sanitation, public works, solid waste collection, or related municipal services.
- Experience operating refuse collection vehicles or other specialized heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of waste collection safety procedures and equipment maintenance.
- Experience leading or coordinating work crews.
Work Environment: This position requires extensive outdoor work and physical activity, including:
- Operating heavy trucks and equipment throughout the workday.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Exposure to dust, noise, traffic, moving equipment, odors, and other sanitation work environments.
- Regular lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting.
- Participation in emergency response and storm cleanup operations when needed.
