Stormwater Technician

The City of Cayce is seeking a motivated and dependable Stormwater Technician to join our Public Works team. This position plays a vital role in protecting public infrastructure, preserving environmental quality, and ensuring the effective operation of the City's stormwater management system.

Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Stormwater Technician performs inspection, maintenance, repair, and cleaning activities associated with the City's stormwater infrastructure. This position supports regulatory compliance efforts, responds to drainage and flooding concerns, and assists with maintaining critical infrastructure that protects residents, businesses, roadways, and waterways.

The majority of work is performed outdoors and requires the operation of specialized equipment, documentation of field activities, and participation in emergency response operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair stormwater infrastructure, including storm drains, drainage systems, conveyances, pipes, and retention facilities.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and tools including trenchers, CCTV inspection cameras, power tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Utilize GIS/GPS technology, construction plans, and utility maps to locate and document infrastructure assets.
  • Conduct dye testing, electronic locating, and field investigations to identify system deficiencies and drainage issues.
  • Perform CCTV inspections of underground infrastructure and maintain inspection records and video archives.
  • Complete detailed work orders, inspection reports, maintenance logs, and regulatory documentation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
  • Assist with emergency responses involving flooding, storm damage, infrastructure failures, and other public works incidents.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including confined space entry procedures, trenching and shoring requirements, and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards.
  • Participate in required training programs and maintain necessary certifications.
  • Assist other Public Works divisions and City departments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • One year of experience in public works, utilities, maintenance, construction, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications for:
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Trenching and Shoring Safety
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, safety protocols, and technical instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain within an established timeframe.
  • Experience with stormwater, wastewater, or utility infrastructure maintenance.
  • Experience using CCTV inspection systems.
  • Familiarity with GPS/GIS mapping systems and utility locating equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic computer applications.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience operating construction or maintenance equipment.

Work Environment: This position involves extensive field work and outdoor operations, including:

  • Working outdoors approximately 90% of the time.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
  • Walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, crawling, and lifting throughout the workday.
  • Working in and around drainage systems, utility infrastructure, excavation sites, and confined spaces.
  • Participation in emergency and after-hours response activities when necessary.
  • Frequent lifting of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting.
