Meter Technician I

The City of Cayce Utilities Department is seeking a dependable and customer-focused Meter Technician to join our team. This position plays an important role in ensuring accurate water service billing and maintaining the City's water metering infrastructure. Position Overview: Under direct supervision, the Meter Technician I is responsible for reading, inspecting, maintaining, and assisting with the repair and installation of water meters throughout the City. This position supports utility operations by monitoring water usage, identifying system issues, responding to service requests, and assisting field crews with water and wastewater infrastructure maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read residential and commercial water meters and accurately record usage data using handheld electronic devices.
  • Inspect water meters and service connections for damage, defects, unauthorized connections, or signs of tampering.
  • Investigate abnormal consumption readings and document findings.
  • Assist with the installation, replacement, and repair of water meters and related equipment.
  • Assist in locating and repairing water leaks at meter connections.
  • Connect and disconnect water services as required.
  • Perform sewer line plugging and unplugging activities.
  • Serve as an on-call technician for reconnects, emergency shut-offs, and related service needs.
  • Pump out meter pits and assist with backflow prevention device inspections.
  • Support utility crews with water and wastewater line repairs and maintenance projects.
  • Complete required reports, maintenance records, timesheets, and daily documentation.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • Minimum of six months of experience as a field crew member or related utility, construction, maintenance, or public works experience.
  • Ability to operate handheld data collection devices and basic utility equipment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and perform duties accurately in the field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • More than six months of utility field operations experience.
  • Experience with water meter installation, maintenance, or utility service operations.
  • Knowledge of backflow prevention devices and water distribution systems.
  • Experience working directly with utility customers and service requests.

Work Environment: This position requires extensive outdoor work and physical activity, including:

  • Walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting throughout the workday.
  • Working in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
  • Exposure to traffic, moving equipment, confined spaces, chemicals, noise, and other utility work environments.
  • Frequent lifting of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting.
