Tim James
Council District 1
Councilman Timothy M. “Tim” James is a lifelong resident of Cayce. He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, the FBI-Carolina Command College, the JFK School of Government at Harvard University and the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s Municipal Elected Official Institute of Government.
Councilman James was a Cayce Explorer with Cayce Public Safety as a young boy and in 1983 he began his career in law enforcement as a dispatcher and jailer with the Cayce Department of Public Safety. He rose through the ranks to serve as Chief of Police for the City of Cayce and Director of the Cayce Department of Public Safety, managing law enforcement and fire suppression services for the City and establishing a reputation as an innovative law enforcement administrator. Councilman James was named the Strom Thurmond Police Officer of the Year and the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber Citizen of the Year.
Councilman James served on Cayce City Council from 2010 to 2015 before moving to Florida to become the Vice President and Director of Public Safety for Ocean Reef Community Association. He moved back to Cayce and was again elected in a Special Election in 2020.
Councilman James is an active member of Trinity Baptist Church and has served the congregation in several leadership capacities, including Chairman of Deacons.
Councilman James has served his community in many ways including as a former member of the Brookland Cayce High School Education Foundation, the Lexington/Richland Drug Abuse Council (LRADAC), past President of various state and local criminal justice associations and served on the Midlands Technical College Advisory Board.
Councilman James was recently appointed as the President and CEO of the Greater Cayce West Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Gay, live in Cayce. He has two adult daughters, Taylor and Megan, who also call Cayce home.
