Municipal Prosecutor (Part-Time / PRN)

The City of Cayce is seeking a qualified and motivated attorney to serve as a Part-Time or PRN Municipal Prosecutor. This flexible public service opportunity is ideal for an experienced legal professional seeking courtroom experience, supplemental practice work, or a meaningful role supporting public safety and the administration of justice.

Position Overview: The Municipal Prosecutor represents the City of Cayce in Municipal Court proceedings and works closely with law enforcement personnel to ensure the effective prosecution of criminal and traffic-related cases. This position serves on an as-needed basis, providing legal guidance, courtroom representation, and case preparation support for the City's Police Department and Municipal Court.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent the City of Cayce in Municipal Court proceedings as assigned.
  • Provide court coverage, including regularly scheduled sessions:
    • Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m.
    • Thursdays at 2:30 p.m.
  • Handle preliminary hearings, pretrial proceedings, and jury trials as needed.
  • Review case files, evidence, and legal documentation in preparation for court appearances.
  • Provide legal guidance and consultation to Cayce police officers regarding criminal cases, investigations, and court procedures.
  • Remain accessible via phone and email to respond to legal questions and case-related matters.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement personnel, court staff, and City officials to ensure the effective administration of justice.
  • Exercise sound legal judgment while representing the interests of the City and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong legal research, writing, advocacy, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and respond promptly to legal matters as they arise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in criminal prosecution, municipal law, or courtroom litigation.
  • Previous experience representing governmental entities or prosecuting criminal cases.
  • Familiarity with South Carolina Municipal Court procedures and criminal law.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple cases and court appearances.

Work Schedule: This position offers a flexible, as-needed schedule with no fixed weekly hours.

Availability is required for:

  • Scheduled Municipal Court sessions.
  • Preliminary hearings, pretrials, and jury trials.
  • Communication and consultation with law enforcement personnel and legal partners as needed.

Compensation: The City of Cayce offers flexible compensation options based on candidate qualifications and availability:

  • Contract Position: Hourly compensation based on experience.
  • Part-Time Employee Position: Salary and benefits package available for eligible candidates.
